4chan is an imageboard website created in 2003 by Christopher moot Poole, who has done an AMA on /qa2/.
History
4chan started out as a copy of another site known as 2chan (which is based because all gooks should kill themselves). In January 2015, the admin moot announced his retirement; 9 months later, he would sell the site to an individual known as Hiroyuki Nishimura.
Downfall
4chan got it's first surge of mainstream attention when Fox News did a report on them, describing the site as an underground hideout for malicious hackers. This brought in a wave of newfags, but the final nail on the coffin was when GamerGate happened, also bringing in a wave of newfags. Ever since that, 4chan is now exclusively populated by bots, (((shills))) and feds.
